The role of Technology in fighting Disease - The outbreaks of Cholera & Water Bourne Diseases
Posted on 27 February, 2018 by Tjiyapo Velempini
The 2017/2018 rainy season is almost over in the Southern Africa Region but it has left a trail of destruction / disruption. This is in the form of water bourne diseases like Cholera / Typhoid and the almost decimation of the early planted maize crop. In both these situations, the lack of appropriate technology and systems to give early signals and warnings was mainly to blame for the huge losses suffered. Lessons must be learnt and resources channelled to research on the appropriate technologies to curb or mitigate the impact of the weather phenomenon in light of the "Global Warming" taaking root right now. This is not a transient situation but one that is manifesting itself with more severe concenquences every year.
Therefore, it cannot be business as usual for the Technology Companies, Governments (National & Local) and Academia as the time is fast slipping away; people will be asking the hard questions pretty soon. The diseases of Typhoid and Cholera are archaic (diseases of poverty) and should not be manifesting themselves in the 21st Century. We need to collectively find ways and the will to grow our economies and uplift the standards of living for our people. There is also a need to stem Rural to Urban Migration to stem the tide of new entrants into the already over crowded main urban centres of the region.
The time is now and lets seize the opportunity to be innovative but at the same time find and build lasting solutions that are technology based.
